Italy Says ‘No’ to US War Agenda Against Iran

Italy has firmly distanced itself from any US-led military escalation against Iran, with Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stressing that Rome neither supported nor took part in decisions leading to war against the Islamic Republic.

Hawzah News Agency- Speaking in a clear and unequivocal stance, Crosetto said Italy “did not support this war, and no one even asked for our opinion,” underscoring that the country does not consider itself part of the process that has fueled rising tensions and military aggression against Iran.

Reports also indicate that the Italian government has refused to allow the use of the Naval Air Station Sigonella for potential US military operations targeting Iran. According to those reports, American aircraft had sought to utilize the base in Sicily as part of missions linked to recent developments, but the request was rejected by Rome.

Crosetto further emphasized that the outcome and duration of any war are not determined solely by the superior military power of one side. Rather, he said, resilience, endurance, and the defensive capacity of the targeted nation play a decisive role.

Highlighting Iran’s strategic weight, he noted that the country’s vast geography, large population, and ancient civilization make any military confrontation far more complex than some actors may assume.

Italy’s position—particularly regarding Sigonella—reaffirms its sovereignty over the use of its territory and military infrastructure. While Rome maintains defense cooperation with the United States and the NATO within established bilateral and international frameworks, any use of such facilities for military operations requires explicit political approval from the Italian government.

The stance is widely seen as reflecting growing concern among some European capitals over the potential expansion of conflict and its far-reaching security, political, and economic consequences—developments that could further destabilize the region and extend beyond the Middle East.
